People Questions

  • Can patio door glass be replaced?

Your door glass panes can absolutely be replaced by a professional repair company.
  • Is patio door glass energy efficient?

Patio doors usually come with double or triple pane glass, which is thermal, insulated, Argon gas filled and energy efficient.
  • How long does it take to get a new patio door glass?

It always depends on the manufacturer's lead time for the glass to be manufactured. However, patio doors often have standard sizes so that you can always check if your particular glass is in stock.
  • What is the standard process of patio door glass replacement?

The regular process of patio door glass replacement should start with exact measurements of the glass that needs to be replaced. Then, it takes some time to receive the glass, and once it comes technicians carefully install it.
  • What does that mean if patio door glass has a broken seal?

When a seal gets damaged, Argon gas leaks out and there is no high-quality way to put it back in. In this case you would need someone to replace your faulty glass unit with a new one to return energy efficiency to your property.
  • What is the requirement for patio door glass by code?

Patio doors must be constructed from safety glass, which is manufactured in a way that it would not pose danger when breaks.

Common Patio Door Glass Issues

Over time, patio door glass can develop problems due to wear and tear, weather exposure, and accidental damage. Below are some of the most common issues that may require patio door glass replacement, along with their causes, affected areas, prevention tips, and solutions.

Cracked or Shattered Glass

Why does this happen?

Cracks or breakage often occur due to impact damage, extreme temperature changes, or structural shifts in the home. Accidental hits from furniture, storms, or even thermal stress can cause the glass to weaken and break.

Most affected parts.

The main glass panel of the patio door is the most vulnerable. If the glass is tempered, it will break into small, less hazardous pieces. Laminated glass may hold together due to its interlayer but will still require replacement.

How to prevent?

- Choose impact-resistant or laminated glass for better durability.
- Avoid slamming doors or placing heavy objects too close.
- Maintain proper frame alignment to reduce stress on the glass.

Solution to fix

A cracked or shattered panel cannot be repaired and must be replaced entirely. Upgrading to tempered or laminated safety glass ensures better durability and security.

Foggy or Cloudy Glass (Seal Failure)

Why does this happen?

Double or triple-pane patio doors have insulated glass units (IGUs) with a sealed airspace between panes. Over time, moisture can seep in due to a failed seal, leading to foggy or cloudy glass. This reduces clarity and insulation efficiency.

Most affected parts.

The insulated glass unit (IGU) is directly affected, particularly in older or poorly sealed patio doors.

How to prevent?

- Invest in high-quality, well-sealed IGUs.
- Ensure proper installation to prevent premature seal failure.
- Regularly inspect for condensation or drafts, which indicate early seal issues.

Solution to fix

Severely fogged glass requires IGU replacement, as defogging solutions provide only temporary relief. Replacing with energy-efficient glass restores clarity and insulation.

Scratches and Surface Damage

Why does this happen?

Scratches occur due to abrasive cleaning materials, pet claws, moving furniture, or environmental debris like sand and dirt.

Most affected parts.

The outer surface of the glass is most susceptible, especially in high-traffic areas where patio doors are frequently used.

How to prevent?

- Use soft microfiber cloths and non-abrasive cleaners when cleaning.
- Keep pets’ nails trimmed to avoid accidental scratches.
- Avoid leaning or dragging objects against the glass.

Solution to fix

Minor scratches can sometimes be buffed out with a glass polishing compound, but deep scratches or etching typically require full glass replacement for a flawless look.

Drafts and Poor Insulation

Why does this happen?

Gaps or worn-out weatherstripping allow air to pass through, reducing energy efficiency and making indoor temperatures uncomfortable.

Most affected parts.

The edges of the glass panel, door seals, and weatherstripping are the main problem areas.

How to prevent?

- Regularly check weatherstripping and replace it when worn.
- Ensure proper installation to prevent gaps.
- Apply caulking or sealant to small leaks.

Solution to fix

Replacing damaged weatherstripping may solve minor issues, but if the door glass is improperly fitted or warped, a full glass replacement may be needed for better insulation.

Difficulty Sliding or Closing

Why does this happen?

Dirt buildup, misaligned tracks, warped frames, or damaged rollers can cause patio doors to become hard to open or close smoothly.

Most affected parts.

The tracks, rollers, and door frame are the primary areas affected.

How to prevent?

- Keep the tracks clean and free of debris.
- Lubricate rollers and moving parts regularly.
- Check for frame alignment issues early to prevent further damage.

Solution to fix

If cleaning and lubricating don’t solve the issue, damaged rollers or misaligned glass panels may need replacement to restore smooth operation.

Excessive Heat or UV Exposure

Why does this happen?

Regular glass allows UV rays and heat to pass through, which can fade furniture, overheat interiors, and reduce energy efficiency.

Most affected parts.

Large glass surfaces on sun-facing patio doors are most affected.

How to prevent?

- Install low-emissivity (Low-E) or tinted glass to reduce UV exposure.
- Use curtains, blinds, or window films for added protection.

Solution to fix

Upgrading to Low-E glass or laminated glass reduces UV rays and heat transfer, making interiors more comfortable and energy-efficient.

Water Leaks and Condensation

Why does this happen?

Improper installation, damaged seals, or blocked drainage holes allow water to seep in, causing moisture buildup and potential damage to floors and walls.

Most affected parts.

The lower edges of the glass panel, door frame, and seals are most at risk.

How to prevent?

- Ensure weep holes are clear to allow proper drainage.
- Regularly inspect and replace worn-out seals.
- Avoid water pooling near the door by maintaining proper grading around the home.

Solution to fix

For persistent leaks, replacing the glass with a properly sealed unit is the best long-term solution.

Now, it is important to be certain that everything is straight and that the glass will fit the opening. Check the measurements and the edges one more time. Then, put a bead of caulk around the inside of the frame. Cautiously install the galss and apply another thin bead of caulk to the glass. Such actions will press it against the trim. Ask your friends to help in placing it, as the glass usually can be large and unwieldy.

  5. Step 5 - Replacing Trim

Beginning at one corner and moving around the edge a little at a time, take the removed trim and start pushing it back. When finally it sets position, secure the trim with tacks down into the door.
